A noble idea, and one I support entirely. However, within the walls of Villainous Ventures Inc., we have traditionally interpreted the initials IWD slightly differently. Here at VVI, IWD stands for International Wickedness Day, and I am pleased to report that we celebrate it with admirable consistency all year round!

Still, the occasion has prompted me to reflect on something important! You see, VVI happens to be led by a woman. Not because of quotas, not because someone felt it would look good in a brochure, but because when the organisation required a leader capable of strategy, invention, dramatic speeches, and the occasional mildly theatrical scheme, I was clearly the best villain for the job!

This is how recruitment should work, in my professional opinion. Our ranks are filled with remarkable individuals. None of them were selected because of gender. None of them were selected because of species, hair colour, or fashion choices. They were selected because they are clever, determined, and slightly chaotic in exactly the right ways.

Unfortunately, the world beyond Cyberly has not always operated with such enlightened pragmatism. For a long time, women had to fight extremely hard for opportunities that others were simply handed. In many places that fight is still ongoing, sometimes in obvious ways and sometimes in quieter, more frustrating ones. Even today there are organisations where women are treated differently, where their ideas are doubted more quickly, and where leadership qualities that are admired in men are criticised in women. It is a peculiar phenomenon.

A man who gives clear instructions is often described as confident and decisive. A woman who does precisely the same thing can find herself labelled “bossy,” or worse, by people who appear deeply uncomfortable with the concept of a woman being in charge. One suspects these critics would struggle terribly at VVI, where competence tends to outrank outdated assumptions. The truth is that bullies exist in every environment. They tend to dislike anyone who is different from them, or anyone who reminds them of something they secretly wish they could be. Some pick on intelligence, some pick on creativity, and some pick on ambition. Their tactics are rarely subtle, but they are also rarely effective in the long run.History has demonstrated, repeatedly, that determination is far more powerful than narrow thinking.

That is why intelligent lifeforms supporting other intelligent lifeforms is so important. Encouragement travels surprisingly far, and confidence grows rapidly when talented people lift each other rather than compete for approval. It is equally important that men recognise talent when they see it and help create environments where ability is valued over stereotypes.

Empowering others does not weaken leadership. Quite the opposite. It produces stronger teams, better ideas, and organisations that are far harder to defeat. At Villainous Ventures Inc. we operate on a very straightforward rule. The best villain for the job gets the position. Sometimes that villain is a woman, sometimes it is a man, sometimes it is non-binary, and occasionally it is a crocodile wearing safety goggles and humming cheerfully beside a suspicious device!

The point is that ability matters more than expectation. So yes, today is International Women’s Day, and I wholeheartedly support the message behind it. Progress has been made, but there are still places where women do not enjoy the same freedom, respect, or opportunity as others. That reality deserves attention and effort from everyone who believes talent should never be limited by prejudice. In the meantime, here in Cyberly we will continue doing what we do best.We will build things, question assumptions, recruit brilliant minds wherever we find them, and occasionally celebrate International Wickedness Day with cake, confetti, and the quiet satisfaction of knowing that ambition is a perfectly respectable thing.

My advice to the next generation of future leaders, inventors, investigators and, if they so choose, master villains is quite simple.Be curious.Be determined.Support the brilliant people around you …. And if anyone tells you that your ambitions are unrealistic, remember that many of the most interesting achievements in history began with someone deciding to prove exactly that person wrong.

Preferably with style!!

By Professor Phoenix Marmalade, Supreme Leader, Villainous Ventures Inc.
